Sam Rober on silly runner superstitions and her Insta-famous cat

Why do you run?

Great Question! When I first started running after college it was to continue the feeling of competitiveness after college sports. That still holds true, but it’s more of a personal competition within myself. I also love running to take a step away from the phone and social media and just be outside. I don’t typically run with a phone or headphones - It’s the best feeling to go and run without having to worry about anything else (or subside that worry!).

How does Portland compare to other cities you’ve lived in when it comes to running?

It’s different! Truly a choose your own adventure! I love being able to pop over to a trail, the river or just a normal loop depending on what I’m feeling that day. I do miss the Charles River in Boston and the coastal routes in San Diego but each city provides their own perks.

Looking back at your commercial.. you shined a light on some of the quirky things runners do. Can you talk a little about the funny side of the running community?

For all those that don’t know what this commercial is, its “weird things runners do” - we’re a special breed out here! Running is so special because of the friendships you can make. Silly superstitions pre-race or noting where all the bathrooms are on a run is something unique that spans across the entire run culture. Mostly the people and being able to have fun is what makes me laugh and what makes running something you can do for years. I’m definitely a “run around until your Garmin hits the mile” gal though, love those even miles!

You are the mastermind (agent? manager?) behind an Insta-famous feline. Tell us more about the origin story and when you knew you were onto something good.

The catgram! If you’ve run with me, you’ve likely heard me shamelessly talk about my cat, Pesto. He’s the man! When we first rescued Pesto in 2020 I taught him how to walk on a leash and do high-fives. During covid, why not make a pet Instagram! I had no idea at the time but it turns out people love a snuggly, and extremely weird cat! If you feel so inclined, @pesto.theorangetabby.

Where are you at with running right now?

I didn’t run too much throughout covid, I really couldn’t find the motivation. After moving to Portland last September I’ve been pretty good at staying consistent in base training. I’ve trained for marathons in the past, but the only time I really went for it in a half…covid hit so I’m looking to get a 5k/half on the calendar in Fall and hopefully crush them!

How did you find out about RCTC, and what do you hope to accomplish with us?

We can all thank the Boston crew for roping me in to RCTC. Glad they did! I’m hoping to have fun and make some great friends here in Portland and test out these legs to see what they can do in a 5k/Half. Who knows, everyone may inspire me to train for a marathon again but that may be a tougher sell :)

Anything else you’d like to share?

Running isn’t my only hobby! I love hiking and backpacking, and am always up for an adventure!
